Grace Only is the center of the Christian doctrine. There is not a single thing that a human can do without God. TULIP is an important doctrine. However, many people misinterpret and misuse this. Total depravity is right but many people think Adam before the fall had a freewill. We can do nothing even if we were in the pre-fall Adam’s status. Adam before the fall needed Christ. Adam could not overcome temptation but Christ could. This is not about a man’s will. My understanding is that Calvin was not very convinced with this doctrine. It is a man-made doctrine. The freewill doctrine needs to be re-examined.
The TULIP doctrine was misused in the 17th century England because the Reformers wanted more people on their side for their social and political reform. They hated their king because he was for the Roman Catholic. They had enough of the oppressive ruling and immoral conducts the Roman Catholic church. However, there was an issue. Many people could not understand the divine election. Therefore, the Reformers like John Owen combined Thomism with Calvinism so that people could be controlled by the new religion. With Thomism, Sola Gratia is impossible. I read Owen struggled to believe he was an elect. There is a way to convince people that they are an elect. If you beat people with the Law and say that there is Christ, the Savior, people repent and believe that they are now an elect. Then they are put under the new church’s authorities. Anyone who does not follow the authorities are deemed a reprobate or someone to be saved. Thus, they became no better than the Roman Catholic.
Slowly Sola Gratia was lost because people put much emphasis on works although they say they are Calvinists. All Protestant churches have now become God’s enemies. The Reformers gave false sense of assurance of faith to their people. Everyone in their mind is an elect. If anyone did not listen to the church authorities, they were considered someone to be saved or a reprobate if they continuously rebel against the authorities. This is still practiced within churches.
I was once challenged by an elder while in the Reformed church. He asked how I became a Christian. I think he thought I was challenging their authorities and thus, I was false. I said that one day I became to understand God’s words. This is the first and foremost role of the Holy Spirit – teaching God’s children with His words (John 14:26). It appeared he did not get it. In his mind, I was supposed to feel I was a sinner and thus realize I needed a savior. That was how he became a Christian and was obedient to the church authorities and obtained the elder’s position. I am not saying he is a false elect. The reason why I challenged the elders was because I was shown dreams of their conduct. There were seven elders. They laughed at me when I tried to get rid of dung. One did not have legs in the dream. There was a serious issue of sexual immorality within the church. And the elders tolerated it. Even before it became known to me, it was shown to me in a dream. The fireplace got heated and was about to consume the whole building. Before I joined the church, I was shown a withering tree that became a killer tree. I challenged the elders so that the church would not be consumed. However, their answer was Sola Fide. The Reformation was designed and conducted by God. But the doctrines are misused to protect church authorities and cover up their sins. When God says, “repent” (Matt 4:17), they say that they are saved by faith and not by works. Therefore, the leaders and the teachers will be punished more harshly (James 3:1).
